NewsMakers 119/9 (all out) TrendBreakers score 120/7
TrendBreakers lost the toss but won
the match by 2 wickets. It was a dream start for bowler Badri Devella returning
to the side after six months away; neither lean or mean but certainly still a
medium fast bowling machine. He earned himself the ‘Man of the Match’ award,
taking five top order Newsmakers wickets to end a fine performance and was the
most economical bowler conceding just 11 runs from his 6 overs as Newsmakers
subsided to 119 all out. TrendBreakers completed a memorable victory in the
opening match of the year 2003
On a surprisingly bright sunny morning, stand-in captain Sai Petluri lost the toss and they batted. Initial indications were positive – both the teams had 9 players and we were all there before 11:30 :-) (Just!). After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Skipper Raguram Damodaran tried some new-style captaincy by opening with Sumanth Tarigopula and Zia Haque.
Sumanth and Zia started solidly, but apparently forgot that they were supposed to score runs. By the end of 8 overs, Newsmakers had 20 runs, thanks mainly to the tight bowling of Chetan and Badri. Badri bowled Zia for 9. Uday joined Sumanth at the crease but found scoring difficult as Badri in particular, and support from Yatin and Chetan imposing themselves upon the Newsmakers batsmen. The pressure tolled as TrendBreakers picked up two quick wickets with Uday P Bowled by K.P for 6.
Badri’s' collection of slower/pace deliveries occasionally confused the batsmen. Mani wasn't happy with his performance (is he ever?) while Sai Petluri wasn't happy with the stumping. Mani followed soon to Badri scoring 8. Sumanth eventually got out, having scored 22 off 44 deliveries.
A special mention has to be made about Badri Devella.
Although he hasn’t been as successful as the team wants him with his batting so
far, he was at his best picking up 5 wickets at the end of his 6th
over. Yatin, Chetan and Krishan Prasad (K.P) ably assisted him. The difference
this time around was the ground fielding as well as catching.
Kuldeep took the score to 119 from 87 in the stipulated 30 overs. Eventually in the last 5 overs the runrate almost passed 6
The TrendBreakers innings got off to a bad start, Zia Haque took the first wicket in the very first over got Tirumala clean bowled. With Chetan getting in quite early with is usual batting position TrendBreaker's got a good partnership between Krishna Prasad and Chetan that laid the foundation for the later batsmen
TrendSetters were languishing run-rate wise by the time Kuljit came in. Enjoying his first bowl of the season (if that is the right word), Kuljit hit the first six of the year and that six did nothing except increase the run rate for TrendBreaker's and the heart rate of Newsmaker's fielders. He then began belting the bowling about, finally working out what we mean when we say "It doesn't matter how you hit it, as long as you hit it hard." They spread the field to stem his tide of boundaries, preferring not to go with the obvious solution of bowling one straight and getting him out. Kuljit played a mature and a highly responsible innings studded with 1 four and 2 sixes.
With just 1 run to win from the last 5 overs the introduction of former captain Kuldeep into the attack brought a real sensation in the game. A wild swing later (or should that be a late wild swing?) from Kuljit saw the ball in the keeper's hands. Injured Chandru tried to hit the full toss ball over Kuldeeps head giving him a simple catch. Still 1 run to win, Two balls later Chetan finally hit the ball hard to the square leg region, found the ball in Ramandeep hands Ouch Ramandeep dropped the catch and Chetan/Yatin completes the 1 run required to win.
53 runs came from the last 11 overs as allowing TrendBreakers to triumph by 2 wickets with 4 overs remaining.
One highlight of the TrendBreakers innings was, the incredible innings played by Chetan Jaitly. He batted through the innings and made 38*
Although it was quite funny to see Zia lose his cool when his third over went for 8 runs with a huge six from Chetan!
Comments: -
Uday J Poosarla: -"We needed the batsmen to get more
runs as 119 in 30 overs wasn’t a defendable score."
Kuljit-Singh: - I
felt that the game was quite challenging and absorbing all through.
However, it was a good day for cricket and it was a good game. It will be interesting to see how Newsmakers will perform next Saturday without their pace/lethal bowler Rajesh R (his finger hasn't healed completely)
The pick of the Newsmakers bowlers was new recruit Ananthnag Ch, who bowled straight and fast, pitching most of his deliveries on the offside.
TrendBreakers left the ground in great spirits with winning the first game of the year 2003 and hopes of bigger and better things to come. Will it be two wins in a row next week? Tune in and find out....
